What We Are

Picture
“Exhibit Us: Desire In Motion” is a multi-genre live art exhibit of original performance pieces created by the artists in them; utilizing dance, text, movement, music, and expression to put subtext on display.

“Desire In Motion” was born out of experimenting and improving at The Actors Studio Drama School, inspired by physical theater explorations.  The technique and training leading to this kind of work are distilled from Method Acting, Grotowski, Brecht and biomechanics, and the individual inspirations of the artist-creators.

Why We Are

Picture

Borrowing a little from La Mama, we employ "Creative risk-taking, experimentation, and challenging artistic boundaries...envisioning art as a universal language."  And like Theaterlab, creating an event where "the theatrical experience as a creative public assembly, and the audience is an important partner in fulfilling our mission." We want the audience to feel less like they were going to a night of theater and more like they were freely experiencing an art exhibit, like at a museum, so that the senses are more directly involved.  By breaking down traditional theater formats to a slightly more raw stage, we hope that truth can be expressed directly, powerfully, and individually.

Non-linear storytelling and non-literal representation give us freedom to make unexpected choices, to use unexpected tactics to express ourselves.  It gives us a chance to create something new.  By collaborating with other artists and using different types of expression - whether it's music, movement, or words - the new combination and collaboration helps us discover new things every time we get together.  Mostly we are inspired by the things that turn us on.
